Flat or hotel in Cebu

Hi
I am going to retire to the Philippines in mid-August and not sure where I want to retire to.
Cebu looks great as does Dumaguete or Mactan Island. Until I see the cities I have no idea where I would like to settle in the city or region.

My plans are to rent something in Cebu for like a month starting mid-August and look around the area to see what place will suit me best for the long term rental.

Would anyone happen to have the same (a reasonably priced hotel or apartment) in Cebu until I get orientated?

Any advise you can give would be deeply appreciated.

Sincerely
Brian

The answer to your question depends a lot on what you consider reasonable and also on what style of accommodation you desire. There are also many considerations such as safety, convenience, etc. which you should keep in mind.

Don't know whether or not you have been here already. However the Philippines is an inherently dangerous country. It is probably a lot more dangerous than it is wherever you come from.

To me, if you have never been here, you may be in for a shock if you go native too quickly.

I therefore recommend staying at the Cebu Marriott. There is only one Marriott property in Cebu City. This hotel is very convenient as it sits right next to the beautiful Ayala Mall. It is safe and up to the highest standard of hotels in any part of the world. It is a bit dated and could use a refresh. But the staff are very honest and you and your important belongings will be quite safe.

The cost is going to be around $100 per night. But I believe it is worth it while you look around for something cheaper or perhaps more suitable for long term accommodation.

I also advise you not to make any irrevocable decisions until you have been here for at least one month. I don't think Phils is what everyone thinks it is.

check out the Hill Top Hotel. It is quiet, maybe $30/night. Located above the Marco Polo which is probably the niceest place in town. The Hill Top has a small pool, probably a 2 star hotel. But very reasonably priced.

Hi Brian,

The previous poster gave you some good advice. May I offer you mine after visiting the Phils and Cebu for the very first time a few months ago?

I, too, couldn't decide where to stay for a month or so. I'm SLIGHTLY high maintenance, but certainly not rich. I didn't want to risk staying in an inadequate place so I did consider the Marriot, even though it was much more than I wanted to spend. I ended up staying at the Quest hotel, about 2 minute walk to the Marriot and Ayala. I was slightly hesitant to book there because it only rated 3 stars (I look for 4 stars) but this is no 3 star hotel!! I found it extremely comfortable, very close to Ayala, AND HALF PRICE OF MARRIOT. The service I received was 5 star there. "Yes sir, How was your day sir, thank you sir" from everyone in the hotel. I was extremely impressed to say the least.

My suggestion: You WON'T be unsafe or uncomfortable there. Move to the marriot after a few days if you wish but I bet you won't. Save 1/2 price and be on virtually the same block.

I REALLY liked the Quest hotel. Cebu, however, not so much. I did, however, travel alone and 1st time to the Phils so I had no contacts there. Met many ladies, most of them flakes though.

Feel free to email me at: [email protected] if you wish to chat.

P.S. I left after 1 week and went to Bohol. I enjoyed it there much more. Felt safer and slower there. Might go back again in January

It is true that the Cebu Marriott is not cheap. It is approximately $100 per night. But for that amount you could eat in the executive lounge and/or the restaurant on the lobby floor for no extra charge. The food in either is exquisite and convenient since you needn't leave the hotel.

There are much, much cheaper places. I'll supply a link to a place in Bacolod which costs $10 or $12 per night. And of course there are all sorts of places in between.

As I've said, if you've been here before, you are probably not going to suffer from culture shock so much, so you can find something quite acceptable in between. But if you are coming from the western world and it is your first visit, you could easily decide to turn around and go home after a week or so here.

Anyway, here is the link:
