Just wonderind if anyone there in the Philippines uses a VPN network and if so, which one they use or recommend? Would like to know how they work for any problems and compatability between the U.S. and the Philippines.

Panglaodreamer ~ I use VPN Master. The US server seems fine, don't see any slowing down on already slow service ;-)

I use Tunnelbear (the free plan) which allots me 500 mb/month and HideMe (also the free plan) which gives me 2 Gb/month. I use it for Netflix streaming movies, since the Netflix Philippines is missing 93% of the US Netflix titles. As for speed regarding the VPN, it all depends on your subscription plan with the local internet provider. I have a PLDT DSL for 990 PHP/month, phone & landlineline included. Although the plan only gives me 1mb for download speed. The higher your subscription rate, the faster your internet will be.

trappedinhell ~ I've also used HideMyAss and others, but just for masking my IP address. Is the 2.5 GB you are getting enough for a lot of Netflix movies, and how does one go about signing up for Netflix from here? Thanks ~

You can go to putlocker and find all kinds of movies for free. Putlocker.is is the best I've found so far. You may have to click on it a couple of times to get the ads to go away, but then the movies are good without interruptions. I down loaded uBlock and it cuts out a lot of ads and popups, but not all. But it's better that what we had before.

@Rescuer HideMyAss hahaha. Good one. It's HideMe VPN. 2Gb is not enough for watching Netflix. My nephew in the states subscribes to Netflix and he was kind enough to email me his user ID & password. I don't use Netflix that much. I usually watch streaming movies at sites like: putlocker.is or subsmovies.com. (just add an ad blocker extension on your browser so there won't be any ads using the streaming bandwidth). If I'm looking for a particular movie, I go to torrent sites like The Pirate Bay or yts.ag and download it. There is a Netflix PH site to sign up, if you really want netflix; but like I said 93% of the US netflix movie titles are not available in the PH netflix. There's another alternative from all these, it's called firestick (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zSZ14VFQ9A8); but you have to have a certain input connector on your TV monitor I think.. I hope this helps. I'll look into that HideMyass VPN. LOL

I tried to download a PAID for VPN but it seems that PLDT will interfere. I then HEARD that the Philippines doesn't like VPNs, they think you are a PEDOPHILE or something. When I go back to US in the spring I will download there. I then think it will work once downloaded. No I'm not a pedophile. LOL

trappedinhell ~ Yeah, that's the correct name ;-) Looked at putlocker but I don't like giving credit card info for a free service. I'll take a peek at the others. Thank you, MUCH appreciated!

@ Rescuer there are plenty of fake putlocker sites, if they ask for membership registration or credit card info, they are scammers. It was wise that you didn't fall for that trick. Legit sites will never ask for info.

@Rescuer Here's the link for putlocker: https://putlocker.is/. Get an adblocker extension so you won't be redirected to another site everytime you click on an item. Adblock plus is a good & free extension if you use Chrome browser.

trappedinhell ~ Thank you, I use Opera because it has a built in VPN. I'll look for an adblocker extension for it or switch to Chrome.

Rescuer,
I watch the movies using my firebox browser which blocks the ads on the Put Locker site.

My solution was to just pay the $30/year for the open version of Hotspot. That's what I did and when we are in PH works great. No problem getting into my work accounts that would otherwise be clocked. I also sign onto my Netflix, directTV and other accounts and watch US sports. Take an extra HDMI cable and we hook the laptop up to the big screen. I even use it here in the states when at the airport or hotel as hackers are everywhere!

So the free version of HOTSPOT is slow but the paid version is much faster ? I thought you would get more data with the paid plan.

Free Hotspot has daily limits on data, Paid is unlimited. Anytime you have additional software active, it will slow things down. But with ads included you have additional processing going on, slowing even further. After we get into more of long-term residence in PH, I may need something different. But, for now and the 3week at a time visits, the paid version of Hotspot works for me. Also, I can have the paid on 5 different devices, so it also goes onto the smartphone for me.

It seems my laptop is ok but my iPad doesn't like the free HOTSPOT so I am reluctant to use the paid version. An idea for some people, if you have a access to a FIOS or other major carrier account and your net is good, yours, a family member or friend, you can get online and login to said account. That's the way I understand it. Some good series out there. THE NIGHT OF BETTER CALL SAUL. THE BLACKLIST. HOUSE OF CARDS. BANSHEE to name a few, that is if you don't mind some blood and a little sex.

Did you ever decide what you were going to use? I found this article that may help you narrow down your options. But I wanted to know if you've decided on anything and if it's working for you? https://securethoughts.com/how-to-watch-netflix-outside-the-usa/

I use a VPN so I can get US based content here in the P.I. There are many good VPN services available. I will say you should look for recent reviews of any VPN you chose before buying. I got a "Bad VPN service" once because I didn't take the time to read recent reviews. Best of luck.
