Hi all. I am serious about moving to dumaguete this year. I am a 51 year old man and have been a telecommunications engineer for 26 years working for Bt as both a contractor and now directly employed by them. Can anyone perhaps tell me what my job prospects might be like over there please Thanks

If you have special skills that are not found in the Philippines you may be able to find work. But getting a job over 30 year old is next to impossible. If any Filipino has your set of skills they by law must be hired over foreigners.

Why do you think working in the Philippines is going to be better than UK? Have you ever been here? BT engineer earns how much per year? Here 15000 pesos a month is a fairly good wage if you can find a job that pays that much. 15000 is about £235 a month. As a foreigner unless you are highly skilled in a field they need the chances of work here are near zero.

My brother in law is an engineer with 30+ years experience at a manufacturing plant in Laguna, as well as being a plant manger.
With other members of the plant he has made trips to Singapore, China, Taiwan and other Asian countries during his career and is scheduled to make another two week trip to China soon.
His income is less than 20K pesos per month.

I will be marrying a local lady and plan to move there on a permanent basis so any kind of job will help. I am well aware of the money that I earn in the uk however I don't need anywhere near that in the Philippines. I'll take my chances. !!

Sir you just don't get it, Foreigners are very rarely employed before Filipinos I'm from the uk and trust me you will find it almost impossible to find work here working for someone else, I've seen adverts in malls where the cut off age is 35 max on top of that you will need a work permit sorry to be so negative but that is reality here

I met an expat pig farmer once and he seemed jolly enough. Then there are bar owners or managers I met around La Union--I knew five or six of them. You need some capital to start it up though-maybe $20,000 USD but be darned careful 'cause one guy ended up living in a tent by the river. I met a guy who told me he knew a couple of guys who were teaching in Filipino schools (no, they were not pediphiles). I also knew a guy who ran a computer cafe (called Antz on Uranus) but he sold out at a loss and after some hassles by some resentful natives. I knew another guy who haf some kind of on-line business that paid him enough to keep him pretty drunk all day. Knew an expat from Germany who sold ads in the Bluebook for Angeles City. Some called him Adolf (but he was not Hitler). All in all, kind of a chasing your own tail endeavor--finding work here. I applied for a teacing job at a local school. I got the feeling they did not hire me because it would have raised some eyebrows. I look upon the issue as a kind of colonial hangover we have to endure because of our past sins like bringing a semblence of civilization here. he he. I say let 'em stew in their own juices whilst I sip this mimosa. lounging in my skivies, after sleeping 'til noon.

Thank you Draks, I have seen too many come here with big Ideas with a big wad of cash, one or two have been lucky and are just about breaking even working for themselves and then you get the ones who come here and get involved with the wrong woman and bang your hey have nothing and are too young to get their state pension (UK) people le have to realize that coming here for a month or so is one thing but living here permanently is quite different as you have to have an income as if you run out of cash your going to be in a world of financial pain. As like you said Draks there is no safety net here, you may get lucky if you live in a Subdivision which has a load of expats who may chip in a few pesos to help you out other than that your on your own

You'll be fine if you have a pension or real estate back home to give u residual income to make that move at 51 years old.

Not sure if you can take early retirement, if you have a private pension. Will be greatly reduced of course. Without an outside income of some sort you are dead in the water. Bars, restaurants come and go I know an English guy owns a nice restaurant and bar good food kareoke, live bands been doing it a couple of years makes no money at all. Sometimes really busy then empty. Another English guy opened Fish and chip shop, with Filipino food as well, spent an absolute fortune setting it up, 2 years he has had to pack it in. Raising pigs well so many filipina raise pigs chickens and fighting cocks, don't see them doing all that well. Your wife to be will suggest you start a business, but of course you can't own a business only 40% of it. The other 60% must be owned by a Philippine citizen. We ran a sari sari store was ok but we struggled a lot of times. Open 5am close 10pm 7 days a week hard work for what we earned. To set up a good sari sari store is about 25000 pesos smaller the store smaller the investment. You wife will want you to buy a house because to rent is a waste of money. You can't own a house and land but she can. So you plough all your hard earned cash into a house and lot and you don't own it. You split up she gets the house. Set up a business employ pele they will steal off you because your a rich foreigner. Even marrying your woman is a huge risk because my guess is you don't really know her that well. Philippines is fraught with dangers and. Frustration. You pays your money and takes your risks

When your job prospects disappoint and you are already settled in the Philippines, it might be impossible to return to your home country and bring your wife with you.
You might have created yet another 'expat-widow'.

To get a filipina into UK you have to have somewhere to live for both, you have to show proof that you can afford to support her, it was a minimum of £23000 a year with no kids and £30+k with kids. Not easy. But this guy Wants to come here and take his chances that's his decision good luck.
