Yesterday in our Expats meeting we heard that as from July 1st its going to cost 17000php a year for Foreigners to get this service and also anyone who is married and is on their spouses policy will no longer be able to do this and the service will be just basic nothing more , Obviously this will leave the door open for other Healthcare Insurance to offer a better deal for expats, you can check this out on their website

Expats who are currently on their wives policies need to be accompanied by their wife and a copy of the current policy when and if they opt to avail themselves of a new policy under their own name at the new prices. By having their wife and a copy of the old policy on which they were listed, they will not have a six month wait for the new policy to be in effect and coverage will begin immediately.

So is Medicare and a private U.S. policy like Blue Cross/Blue Shield useless in the Philippines?

Medicare does not work outside of the USA or US Territory. Closest " territory " is Guam. About three hour flight away. Private insurance usually not either but ask your agent or call them to verify.

Unfortunately Philhealth still looks by far the cheapest option for anyone over the age of 65. Private healthcare companies really ramp up the costs over that age even if they will cover you at all.

Gary D: yes I checked too. PhilHealth still a good deal. If anything really really serious happen guess I will try to get back to the USA or swim to Guam. Guess we need to keep in mind Philippines does not need to cover us at all but still think it is very unfair to have such a gap between " our" coverage and Native Born residents.

Again, I am a rooking . what does Phil-health cover. Can you get it from day one when you arrive? what are the other options? I heard you can pay a hospital direct for care ( they have a hospital direct policy ) . I plan to live near Cebu ... Many thanks people ! J.

You need to be paying in for six month before it's active although there my be a loop-hole by paying six months up front. Philhealth doesn't give you full cover it's more of a discount scheme and the amount of discount in any one occasion is not known in advance.

Can you get Phil-health right away when you land in the PH ? .... or do you have to be in the country for a number of months. I would just pay the 6 month fee then , and then get cover I gather ? hmmmm , odd there is no policy per se !? Is there alternatives in the country that are better . I heard you can go direct to a hospital and get a policy from them ? Sound odd - but maybe an alternative ? Thanks guys ! J.
