Hello,
My wife and I bought a lot last year in Palawan. Though we are still waiting for the land title to be officially authorised, we have been asked to pay taxes and even "backtaxes" (taxes apparently not pad by the previous owner). What is the tax procedure? Where can I find more info on it? Who can I consult to make sure the payment is recognised by whicever authority is supposed to receive the money. And has anybody had a similar experience with "backtaxes"? Thx for your replies.

We have property with $400 back taxes. It is from who knows how many years back There are 8 lots with 8 different property owners and the other 7 refuse to pay the back taxes. I give up trying to figure it out. I know every once in a while someone in our family takes a few bucks down to the City Hall and puts a little on the tab.

I am sure you're right about that. It is a large chunk of ancestral land that was given to the children of my mothers mother. Those that passed away would be passed on to their children. My wife has bought 4 of those lots. As we have physical possession it is probably best to leave it at that. No one can sell without everyone's cooperation and what's the chances of that?

Yep, you are 100% correct about relatives not cooperating. I know somebody who bought property here and found fifty-seven (57) titles to the same piece of property!

For the Price we paid, $600 to $1000 per each couple hectare lot it's not worth worrying about. We already got that back in coconut harvests.

Example here my Gals Mom inherited one hectare from her parents. She owns this one hectare of rice land along with 7 or 8 brothers and Sisters. Some of which actually found people to make pawn loans on it. Already told my gal when she inherits her share just gift it to one of her brothers or sisters. No way do I want to be involved in sorting out that mess.

LarryKar ~ Yep, met a guy who built a 6 million peso house, which his EX filipina wife pawned for 50K pesos. When he asked about the 50K pesos, he got the typical Filipino I don't know.....

Depends where you are and who your withyou have to make your own paradise as everyone has their own idea what paradise is, for some people it's being able to bask under a palm tree near a beach. For others it's hanging out with your mates having a beer and shooting a game of pool in a local bar, or bird watching or wakeboarding

Take your title to the Registry Office next to City Hall in Sta Monica. I think it's about P250 to get copies of property records. If liens are on it, it will identify. Also the property tax office in City Hall can help.
