Practical expat income options for a simple life?

It seems clear that making western wages somehow can carry a small family far in PH. My fiance and I aren't looking for the high life, just a comfortable life by PH standards whose bells and whistles are realized in having enough money for time, food, education, and general comfort. I hear a lot about starting an online business or a blog, but I'm curious if anyone out there knows something of generating around $1200 USD per month on a reliable practical basis from an internet connection. Are there careers that I can train for that will give secure opportunities in this vein? We really love it there on her home on Bantayan Island; any ideas on how to make it work there are much appreciated. Thank you!

Most filipinos survive on making a little money and a little money there but having a steady income is a hole different ballgame. Do they have internet on your island and is it reliable, is the power even reliable?

I have an internet business working in mental health. I don't make a lot, perhaps $300 a month, but it is picking up and I'm getting more and more clients, but the internet side of this practice has taken 5 years to build to this point. Internet businesses take time to build, very few ever make a good living at it. My web host says that about 2/3 of all websites started fail within the first year and the other 1/3 squeezes by.

I know a Brit that works full time on the internet teaching English to Japanese and Chinese clients. He makes about $3 for 20 minutes, which translates to about $9 per hour, which by Filipino standards is very good pay, since many don't earn that per day.
