I originally come from Poland, Gdansk, and we would also love to retire there eventually. My family still live in Poland, but I have been in London for 30 years and we have now moved to the USA. I go to Poland every year and use my american/british bank credit/debit cards for every transaction. Also I am able to withdraw cash from ATM there. All shops take foreign cards, so there is no problem with normal day to day expenses. It may be worthwhile opening a polish bank account for any bill payments etc. Poland is hoping to join the EEC in 2004, so their banking system is in line with the European system. I have also recently transferred a big amount of money to Poland to a relative's account, and they received it within a week - unfortunately my bank charges were high for this. Good luck in Poland, I wish I was there, but will be going again in October!
