Has anyone had experience with importing a car from the USA into Portugal? I am trying to determine how practical this is from a cost standpoint. The car is less than a year old (BMW) and I would prefer not to sell it in the USA before I go to Portugal for 2-years.

Hi there,
I was also looking into this very thing for my car (import from Boston to Sevilla, Spain). I heard that it would cost around $4000 for transport alone and then whatever hidden costs for the import and translation to European standards. (They might have to do some things to the car). It might be worth it for a fairly new BMW but for my 2 yr old Ford Focus, not quite worth it.

Acutually the transport cost from Dallas, TX to Lisbon, Portugal was not that bad. Shipment up to the port of Setubal, Portugal was quoted at $ 1450.00 – ex our terminal in Grand Prairie TX. There would be destination European port handling charges applicable in Setubal, which are approximately $150.00.
Please note that the above rate does not include marine insurance, customs duty or sales taxes if applicable.
It's the actual import side and "troubles" that I'm concerned about.

Importing a car from the US would probably be a major hassle with customs in Portugal. It would probably entail a good amount of paper work as well. Could be worth it though, as taxes on cars are very high here (Hyundai's costing $7-8K are double that price here).
Call the Portuguese consulate in the US for more information.

If you have the residence card in Portugal you are in title to change the plates of your car free of tax. However, theres quite a few pappers to attend before doing so.

I was wondering the same but my question was also on the size of the engine ie importing a 4 litre V6 ....is that a problem ?
I dont live in Portugal but have an appartment there and was going to import from US to there when i return from US next year

Portuguese customs are hell. Importing in Spain is not bad and the taxes you have to pay are not very high. We ended up doing this since my husband is from Spain and his business involves a lot of travel between Portugal and Spain. Portuguese customs wanted us to pay 14000 Euros for a 4 year old Saab. In Spain we paid 2000 Euros (transportation cost separate).
