Portugal winters

I live in the "back of the beyond," (Maine) and as I think about retiring this year, I'd like to explore other countries for the three ugliest (here) months of the year (January, February and March). An acquaintance of mine told me years ago that she and her husband spent several winter weeks in Portugal where the weather was sweet, the cost was low, and the people were friendly. She's no longer around so I can't ask her about the details.

Once I retire, money will be in short supply, but my needs are few. A sunny room, a telephone line for my laptop (I plan to write), sun and sea.

I have done little travelling so far (Mexico & sailing off the coast of Spain) but it is my dream to soak in the cultures of other countries and stay warm in winter.

Where would you start to prepare for this if you were me?

I'm grateful for any advice you can give me.

Dear Scoop,
Compared to a Maine winter, winter in Portugal is great. We live in the Lisbon area. The climate is very much like Southern California. It does RAIN A LOT in the winter and is generally in the 50's to 60's until March. There are beautiful sunny days interspersed with rain. In the Algarve it may be warmer, but might not be the brilliant warm weather you are hoping for...
