My boyfriend and I are going to Lisbon for 6 mos. and he is lucky enough to already have an internship lined up at the US embassy there. I, having a college degree but knowing little Portuguese, am at a loss to what line of work to chase after. I'm not picky at all, just want something to give me a little cash, enhance my ortuguese skills, and most of all, meet new people. Any ideas? Please let me know. I'll take anyone's advice/recommendations. THANKS :)

Perhaps you would enjoy working as a nanny for a family that wishes for their children to learn English?

It's not exactly 'glamourous' but I've found waitressing/bartending to be THE best work when in a new country. Not only do hospitality staff generally know the ins and outs of what's going on in your new city, they tend to know the 'real' city and not the tourist traps. Additonally, you can meet some great contacts, especially if you pick your location. When I was interested in meeting business types, I bartended in the financial district in a bar frequented by financial types; wanting to discover the artsy side of my new town I waitressed at the restaurant of a local art gallery. I've found great fulltime jobs from these parttime gigs. Working in a hotel I met lots of business travellers, one became a contact to a fulltime non-hospitality position. And, don't forget, hospitality comes with all sorts of great perks - cheap drinks around town and tickets to shows.

And, you'll usually find like-minded types; young, travellers, locals etc..you'll likely find that most hospitality people are either in it for the love of people or becuase they're also trying a new path in life and this is the way to pay the bills.
Good luck!
