I'm returning to Cascais, Pt. for more "research" about living there. I'd like to set up a local bank account and also obtain a "fiscal number". I'm told this will help when it's time to apply for my resident visa. I'd appreciate any helpful suggestions. Thanks. Kevin

Hello, Kevin! This is your American Friends, eager to see you again. There are two parts to the answer: first, to get your NIF you must have your temporary residency visa. If you started this process in the US and just need to finish it here at the SEF office, it will be fairly easy. I know that's what you were working on this summer. Second part is which bank: You want one well-rated and supported by the government after the recent banking reviews. The top four are: Caixas BPI is one, I think that Caixa Geral de Depósitos (CGD), number one AND I understand they allow a US denominated account so you can pull out $ and exchange to euros yourself; Banco Santander Totta, consistently top-rated; Banco Português de Investimento (BPI; and Milleneum. Based on branches in Cascais, all of these are covered.
