Renewing residency visas

I just read Susan Kortase's article on United States Citizens Moving to Portugal. I would like to know if Type I residency visas are granted for the first year, is the process for the 2 year renewal completed in Portugal or does one have to return to the US? And if completed in Portugal, is the process as rigorous as the initial process?

Thanks for reading my article and for letting me reply to your questions. 1. I think you might be asking about the Visa Type --defined by your reason for staying in Portugal longer than the initial 90 days. If you are, go to this link: http://www.embassyportugal-us.org/Embassy_of_Portugal/Residency_Visa.html 2.Visa Renewals are completed in Portugal, without the need to return to the USA. 3. Reapplication is as rigorous as the initial application, but you're accustomed to it and the pain seems less! Most of the documents required for the initial application are required for each renewal, except that the US Criminal Record is replaced by a Portugal Criminal Record. You can authorize the SEF to obtain your Portugal Criminal Record for you. Please let me know of other questions.
