A wide range of meds are available over the counter and also by prescription, with pharmacies in every area sharing each other's open hours to ensure you have access to a pharmacy at all times. Prices tend to be significantly lower. You can obtain your meds here if you bring a letter, note or prescription from your home doctor that lists: your name, date of birth; your doctor's name, address and phone number; and the latin and common names of your meds along with dosages and timing. Letter should be signed and dated. We are still using ours from 4 years ago. I can run over to our pharmacy and ask about the pricing if you want, just need to know the name and dosage of your meds.

Boeiden: If you search around this site, Portugal Expat Forum, you'll find a number of stories regarding what drew people to Portugal and what we've discovered since then that makes us stay...at least for now, as nothing needs to be forever. And the reasons vary widely, yet with some consistent themes: generally good weather; friendly people who accept differences and make us feel welcome but also cared for; good prices for food, wine, entertainment; a stepping stone to the rest of Europe and the UK for great trips; English typically spoken a lot of places. There's a rich history and culture of museums and architecture, poets and writers, than some similarly-priced places to live and we don't have a 'poor natives' vs 'rich foreigners' environment. If one goes to good restaurants, the food can be great, but the common fare is rather narrow and simple, so comments about the cuisine depend on where people go. We live a block from the ocean so daily walks in the sun or rain mingled with the fresh ocean breeze and salty air are wonderful. Unfortunately, parents don't discipline either their kids or their dogs, so you have wild children running and screeching in restaurants and dogs barking for hours and defacating everywhere. Downside to everyplace, isn't there! There are many books and articles you'll discover via a google search that detail life here, and compare it. I suggest you check out Tim Leffel's blog and books ('Cheapest Destinations Guide') for info along those lines.
