My husband and I are U.S. citizens who are currently living in Ecuador. We have been here for over 3 years and we now wish to move to Portugal. I have been following the visa application threads, but I have a couple more questions. First, can we apply at the Portuguese consulate in Quito, or would it be better to go to the U.S. to make our application? Also, do we need to get a criminal background check from both the U.S. and Ecuador? Also, I am having trouble getting a good set of fingerprints for the FBI. They have rejected 2 sets as being unreadable. Any alternatives or suggestions? Thank you.

Hi It's Gary from Cuenca. We met and talked about Portugal. I am here now. I went to the US and applied. It took about 6 weeks. Might be easier to get fingerprints done there also. I already had an FBI report so I did not have to get fingerprints. In the US it appears one uses either the San Francisco Embassy or the Washington,DC Embassy depending on where you are located. I was in Florida. And, Dina in DC Embassy very nice and helpful. I don't know if this helps you at all.

Various approaches to your situation. I've coached three or four couples recently in their moves from Ecuador to Portugal so I can copy you on that info, but I'd prefer to send it to your email address. Can you send me your address? I'm at skorthase@hotmail.com

Thanks Gary, We were hoping we can do most or all of the work here in Ecuador. Don't know if that's feasible yet. Thank you for your reply. Maybe we'll see you soon!

COUNTGA is correct...many find it easier to apply from the US, keeping their stay short by using a channeler and having the rest of their documents ready in advance (and many docs you have already from moving to Ecuador). The consul in DC with Dina Silva is much, much better than the SF office.
