We will be moving to Portugal this summer. We will be visiting the Algarve for one week to explore the area for living possibilities, 14-22 March. We would like to meet with other English-speaking expats for coffee/lunch/dinner (our treat) in exchange for the opportunity to meet other expats and learn some new information about the Algarve and, in particular, the Silves District. We're from North America, retired, in our early 60s, and interested primarily in pottery, music (acoustic instruments), live theatre, basketry and gardening. We look forward to our move to Portugal, after having lived for four wonderful years in Ireland!

A week does not give you much time to see the Agarve. Tons of English speakers in the Algarve, including Brits, Irish and Scots. I'm from USA & have been in Tavira about 2 months. Feel free to contact me if in the area: 93 777 9347 cell. The pottery city around here is Porches, is my understanding. It is southeast of Silves about 13 km by road. I've not been to Silves but it's on my list. Have a good trip and visit. Gary

Hi Gary, I was in Tavira a couple weeks ago, really loved it and plan to return after summer and rent an apartment for a longer stay and see how I like it. Any tips you can tell me about Tavira? I met some cool people at Pessua and around. Too bad I didn't see your post...Any other places you recommend to connect with people? Or tips on renting? If I like it, I would like to buy a townhouse. How is the winter? I currently live in Connecticut so I am sure it is much better in Tavira! Lisa

Hi Lisa. It appears Tavira is getting more popular. Of course, summer season is upon us. Today it was about 80F & sunny, of course. Rentals - 90+ % are furnished. Two names for you. Jose da Marta at rentals@portugal-accommodation.com. And, Angela Dias at eapm@iol.pt. Winters are not bad not compared to Connecticut! Seems like mostly 40s & 50s & into low 60s. Most of the rain occurs in winter. Algarve considered semi-arid. Can also get warm in the summer. I was here - in Carvoeiro- last July and it got to 103 F but it didn't feel that bad. July is always dry. I have not met that many folks thus far because I don't hang out at the sidewalk cafes. Know my neighbors, of course. Hope this information helps. Cheers! Gary

Thanks, Gary. I promise not to tell many people...I don't think it will have much appeal to Americans actually. I am an artist and like the light and the vibe.

Hi, We are thinking about moving to the area in a few yrs. First we want to take 3 weeks and tour the different areas to see what would be a good fit. The draw to the Algarve area is the l0w cost of living and the good medical

Hello Muffet: I can recommend you a real estate agent called Elly van Hulst (http://www.property-runner.com) and a lawyer (http://fernandomartinsadvogado.pt/en) We bought our house in Santa Catarina from Elly and Fernando was our lawyer. Hope this helps.

Hello-We are a married couple and my husband has just retired. I am wondering if you know if a couple could rent in a nice area and keep the monthly budget to 2000. US dollars a month including rent? I know you can only stay 180 days I believe it is so I guess we would need a short term rental. Do you know if this is possible? Also preferably in an area where English is at least somewhat spoken. Thanks for any tips. We don't need an apt even a room would be fine.

Hello,
May I suggest that you take a look at our website www.algarveseniorliving.com which has a good breadth of information on a number of topics, as well as links to other insitutional sites with relevant information.
We have for some time operated a number of "Discovery Tours" which are one of our most popular services. These allow prospective future residents to understand the areas in which they might wish to reside as well as real estate (rental or purchase) options within them. It is by far the most efficient way of understanding your options. Area before property as we tend to say...
Feel free to be in touch. Regards

Hello,
You will be able to live comfortably on a budget of $2,000 a month, in aprticular as the USD has hit record highs against a few currencies. You should be able to find a long-term rental, although all-year rentals are increasingly difficult to find as people switch their properties to often more lucrative summer rentals.
It was not clear whether you actually wished to remain more than 6 months, but if so you should consider residency posisbly under the NR program, if you qualify. Less than 6 months, you will initially be able to apply for a tourist visa which can be extended but not to 6 months as far as I can recall.
May I suggest that you take a look at our website www.algarveseniorliving.com which has a good breadth of information on a number of topics. We have one of the largest portfolios of private rental properties across the region, including full-year and winter lets and work based on client requirements. Often if we do not have something on our books, we have someone who might be able to source a suitable property.

Hi Muffet,
Because we only work with the senior market which requires choice, we work with a range of real estate partners on the ground (more than 35) as well as a panel of lawyers. The partners and lawyers we recommend may change depending on the area you are interested in and your plans (rent, buy, etc). Feel free to be in touch via this site or via our web site www.algarveseniorliving, com and we would be happy to see if we can assist further.
Best regards
