Hello to all you Americans retired in Portugal! Do you still pay Medicare Part B premiums just in case you might move back stateside or do you just forgo the premiums? Just wondering if it is worth paying the Part B seeing that you would probably never use it. If you try to cancel the Part B how would you go about doing that? Thank you for comments or suggestions! Louis

Its my understanding once you opt out, your out for good. That's pretty final and I would want to be sure you never would need to head back to the US for medical treatment. Never is a long time..LOL

You can discontinue your Part B or opt-out if you haven't yet qualified to register for it; you can opt back in or start Part B if you return to the US and want to have this coverage, paying a fine for each year you didn't participate. If you are participating in Part B and move here full time, you should cancel your participation prior to moving here (just because it's easier to work this from the US). You can find several online resources related to this topic at AARP or the US government website.
