Lisbon Neighborhoods

My husband & I are just starting our search for the right place to retire & Portugal is on our short list. We are visiting Lisbon in August 2016. We are interested to know the neighborhoods we should explore, if there are expats that would be willing to meet to discuss what it like to live in Portugal with us. We are not interested in meeting with organizations/people who want to sell us anything, just friendly people who have already made the move. I look forward to hearing back with comments, advice and general information! Thank you!

I've been visiting Portugal and moving to Lisbon in June. I have no agenda except to enjoy a new home and meet lovely people. I'd be happy to know you

Hi Craig and Micki,

We will be arriving this fall and will be starting out in Lisbon for one month and during that time want to check out Cascais. I am scouring the internet for info on local and to Lisbon transportation because will not have a car.

We also want to know how easy it is to visit a doctor/clinic/dentist/or hospital should we need one and if English is spoken and understood. We will have private insurance.

Supermarkets, fresh markets and the day to day things one needs to live needs to be checked on. I will be looking at the rental site you shared and appreciate keeping in contact with you and others as the time gets nearer.

We would love to meet for coffee or lunch, I am sure we will have questions.

Thank you very much,
Lin

Lin: The RE site link I sent has some rentals but is more skewed toward sales...except for the neighborhood (bairro) descriptions as it's the only centralized place for this info. You should also make some appointments with realtors to see what's available. They don't show each others' listings and don't work very wide geographical areas, so you'd need one in Lisbon, another in the Cascais/Estoril area if that would interest you. You will want to purchase a Via Viagem card...ask for a 'zapping' card so that it works on most buses, trams, trains and you can add money to it at the station card readers. A train from Lisbon's Cais de Sodre station brings you to Cascais, the end of this special train line. We've lived here for 5 years and like most Americans don't have a car. It is easy to find docs/clinics/hospitals with English language staff and the ClinicaCUF group will be your best choice. When your trip gets closer, let us know where you're staying and I can be more specific about your essentials and getting around.

To Alfacina: You mentioned you're an American living in Lisboa, available to help with any questions--I have a few and am eager to get your input: (a) do you have a resource who does your PT taxes whom you can recommend, or do you do them yourself? (b) have you been here long enough to apply for the 5th year "permanent" resident permit? If so, how did you address the A2 language proficiency? (c) have you turned in your US driver's license for a PT license, and if so, where did you perform the exchange? (d) how are you finding the noise/congestion levels in Lisboa--we are interested in Estrela, Sao Bento, Principe Real and Ourique...what do you think? Thank you!

Quick Update! We visited Lisbon, Cacais & Sintra last week & LOVED them all! We met a couple people (Fern & Arthur) & between the 2 of them my husband is convinced Portugal is the first place we will retire in a few years. Couldn't be happier with our visit! Thank you!!

Hello-We are looking at checking out Portugal. A family member visited there and loved it. I am wondering if there is any way a retired couple can stay for more than the 90 days that is allowed? Any help would be great. I assume it would be hard to rent a place for 90 days since we would have to leave the country and I believe you have to wait another 90 days before entering again? Thank yiou again for any help.

I'll be arriving on August 15th. I can't believe it's almost here! I'd also love to meet up with anyone who might be available, or at least to get some phone numbers to call when i can't figure out how to order groceries, pick up a package, get bus tickets or where to buy specialty/prescription dog food for my little guys. Moving is so exciting, but also filled with so many things to learn.

Thanks to everyone on this site who contributes such great information and if there's anyone who's willing to exchange phone numbers, please pm me!

Hi Yummmm,

We arrived yesterday and have had interactions with many people in Lisbon already and not just in tourist areas. We have found the majority of those do speak English and if not, they will find someone to help.

Genuine, friendly, kind, helpful....does not begin to describe our experience so far. Complete strangers have gone out of their way to step in to help translate and actually walk us to the place instead of pointing.

If this is our first impression of Portugal, the people of Lisbon have made our first day amazing.
