I'm considering moving to Portugal upon retirement and shipping furnishings and my 1977 Porsche 930 Turbo. Whats the duty needed or taxes to pay?Shipping from Dundalk Md. is $1600.00, I'd like to tour Europe for a few weeks then bring the car to Portugal. Is this doable?

Wow! No response to this yet? Just joined forum about a week ago and we are moving to Portugal within a year or two, or three. Read more about us in "about me" in my profile to explain that. Anyway, I'm considering shipping my 2011 Mercedes SLK350 when we finally do move. So come on people. I know there aren't many Americans in this forum but there has got to be at least one who has shipped there car from the USA?! Pretty please.... : )

Hi
I suggest you to contact a specialized company in Portugal and clarify with them.
Here the contact details of one company that I know deal with this:
Name: Mr.Manuel Morais
email: [email protected]

Hope this will help you.
Regards

Why no responses to your questions? Because few import cars from the US and then pay to retrofit them to EU standards; because you are several years away from a move and laws can/will change in that time.

Hi - don't know if this will be of any help to you or not....I remember when I was getting ready to ship that information was available on the Portuguese Consulate's web-site with a section on shipping cars..........anything that involves paperwork tends to become complicated very quickly as no two people seem to have the same information! Good luck!

In Lagos now...Picking up my car in Rotterdam in about 10 days. Found cheapest is Newark to Rotterdam. Many shippers, just google. Long learning curve, eg. roro car empty, with possessions, container...40 ft shared is cheapest. 3rd party Liabilty insurance with no residence is the hard part. Visiting Alpop (this site) in Portimao Monday to seek help. Can get tourist coverage for 15 days in Holland...not enough obviously. Then heading to Black Sea, and will get longer coverage there hopefully. Good luck! For me too!!

Cars get shipped from country to country all the time. Perhaps the reason for little in the way of responses is because the information is easily found using Google.
https://www.google.ca/search?q=importing+us+car+to+portugal&ie=&oe=

I sometimes wonder if people do any searching for themselves at all before posting a question in a forum.

OldPro; Yes, I have researched shipping a car to Portugal. However, what automobile shipping companies tell you is not the complete picture. As they say, you will never understand a situation until you experience yourself. And that is what I seek from someone who has actually experience the shipping process; from step 1 to finally driving off in their car at their destination.

Dearest OldPro...you hit the nail on the head. Believe that I have grown weary of the manifest inability or unwillingness of so many to do just a little bit of work to get their own answers. Sigh.

craigandmicki,

I feel your pain. I used to have a lot of knowledge on a dfferent (traveler's) message board. The more helpful I was, the more insane the questions became, either in their incredible complexity or their mind-boggling simplicity. It eventually seemed that nobody could research anything by themselves. I finally gave it up, as I had turned into an unpaid travel agent. I hope it doesn't come to that for you, because I have greatly valued your insiders' knowledge of the residency and acculturation processes for non-EU citizens. Please hang in there, and know your efforts are genuinely appreciated!
