A friend clued us into Afpop and we joined it, too. We halved the cost of our medical insurance with Alliance so it was WELL worth joining. People living in the Algarve have even more benefits due to the courses, presentations and events that Afpop sponsors. It is a well respected organization in Portugal.

Looking at the website it appears to be tailored explicitly towards the Algarve area. Do you know of anyone using this up towards the silver coast? It seems most of the services and companies are only in the south.

We're in Cascais and know of a number of people in the Cascais/Lisboa/Sintra area using Afpop (a 95 euro annual fee) simply to get access to Medal, which offers a host of insurance products at reduced, group rates (Allianz health care coverage is half the rate the banks charge for the same coverage). So, while Afpop offers stuff that's in the Algarve, the Medal broker is country-wide, as the health insurance Allianz is country-wide.

This is great news. One of our hurdles is to get the health insurance costs down. That benefit alone would be worth it.
