Car Buying

Post New Topic

Hello All, Does anyone have any experience buying a car in one EU country then driving it to another? I ask because the best place for us to start our new adventure in Portugal is Amsterdam. (That's the best choice for flying our dog abroad and we have friends who speak/write both Dutch and English who can help us get a car.) I assume we would need to obtain temporary registration for NL then register it when we get to Portugal. Would it be considered an import and be subject to tax? Any help is much appreciated. Thanks, Terri

I would agree that your idea makes little sense from a practical standpoint. The paperwork/tax hassle would be a real pain.

You can enter the EU through Amsterdam with your dog if that is easier for you and then simply move internally (within EU) to Portugal before buying a car.

It is possible to do, but you will need to pay taxes when you will register a car in Portugal. Why don't you consider to arrive straight to Lisbon with your dog? There is nothing difficult with papers for dog. I am flying to Lisbon with my dog all the time. All veterinarians in airport speak English, procedure for dog is clear. I can give you contacts of veterinarians in Lisbon airport and you will contact them directly.
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me.
Regards,
Olga

Dear Olgaolga,

I just read your comment regarding flying in with your dog. I am arriving to Lisbon next week with my Maltese. He will be flying on the same flight as me. I have all his papers, complete and vaccination card etc. I have been informed by the Portuguese Ambassador here that I have to contact the vet at Lisbon airport. Please would you be so kind to share the contact details that you mentioned you have. If you have any other tips/ suggestions for getting things sorted at Lisbon airport, it will be much appreciated. Thank you very much.

Dear SD107,
I also have maltese:)

so, here is email of vets piflisboaa@dgav.pt
According to European requirements you need to send notification (standard form) about your dog arrival, scanned documents, document about entering EU (standard form) also your dog has to have chip. All this should be sent in advance. Ask them to send you all necessary documents that you need to fill prior going.

Then they will check everything and reply to you that everything is ok and your dog can enter. Of course all necessary vacvination should be made in time. Price for dog entering 35EUR.

My advice - send them email today.

Wish both of you and your dog a nice flight:-)

Best regards,
Olga

Thanks All. Our dog is large (German Shepherd) so she will have to fly as cargo. As there are no non-stops from Seattle to Lisbon, we decided that flying to Amsterdam was a better option for her and us. Our thoughts about buying a car there simply had to do with us having folks we trust to help us translate all the paperwork. Nothing is set in stone but I am very glad to get your advice about taxes, etc. I'm looking at other options such as renting a car and driving from Amsterdam to Lisbon and flying with Cassie as excess baggage. Buying a car in the Lisboa/Cascais area is easy. Several people have worked with Miguel at Santogal near Cascais Shopping. His English is flawless and he does all the paperwork for you. One couple saved several thousand, another 6k €, thru him. Insurance thru Medal via afpop is less than 400/yr for superior coverage, road taxes 100/yr, no inspection until car is 5 years old. How you get here from Amsterdam....seems a rental is best. Many people here do not have cars, choosing to rent one if necessary or for monthly excursions and relying on pub trans otherwise.

Dear Olgaolga

Thank you very much for your reply and all the information you have given me.

We will be in Albarraque, Sintra, perhaps Scotty my Maltese could be friends with your doggie if you aren't too far away. ??

It has been widely reported in the press that the EU court calls Portugal's taxation on used cars matriculated from other EU countries illegal. Portugal disagrees. Total tax paid for 2007 from another EU country is €2.676,25. Higher for more recent models.

This is all great information folks and very much appreciated. One last question: If we do drive from Amsterdam to Lisbon, will there be any issues with our visas or crossing borders with a dog? Thanks, Terri

You are welcome, Sarita. I'm glad that I could help. I live in Ericeira, it is just in 20 km from Sintra. But unfortunately I can't meet with you because I'm in business trip abroad now. Have a nice trip and enjoy Portugal! Sintra is magical place!

Dear Terry,
of course for big dogs it is more difficult to fly. My second dog is also a German Shepherd and I know that the process for owners and dog isn't easy. There is one important thing while entering through Amsterdam notify vets that the dog is going to Portugal. Usually nobody checks documents while crossing from one EU countries to another, but sometimes they can.
