I am reading how even the small towns are packed with tourist in the summer months. Is it advisable to leave in May and come back in Sept? We do not like crowds. We really want to be near the water, have some shops near by and just chill. We are not into the bar scene or sports. We hope to be able to travel all over while we are there and see countries we haven't been to before. Again we will be on a strict budget and plan on camping when we travel. thoughts please. PS I do not have stars in my eyes about any of this. I am starting early and reading everything i can before we make a choice.

It all depends where in Portugal you want to be. Coastal towns are more crowded naturally. Try exploring more inland, there's plenty of space where you can still relax. Check http://www.pureportugalholidays.com/property-category/long-term/
maybe that's more your idea. Good luck !

Well not all areas are popular with tourists but even in areas that are, going a few miles inland usually eliminates 90% of them.

As for being near the water, it's over-rated. Unless you are fanatic about swimming in salt water every morning at 6am type thing, having it in proximity soon wanes in your priorities.

It's like having a view of the mountains out of your bedroom window. People say on real estate tv programs, 'oh imagine walking up to this view every morning'. In reality, what happens is you wake up, stumble your way half asleep to the toilet to take a pee. Just like everyone else does with or without that view.

When I lived on a popular tourist island, I visited the beach perhaps once a month after my first year. As the saying goes, 'familiarity breeds contempt'.

Going a few miles inland also means lower rents, fewer other expats and far more chance to become part of a village/small town community.

Good reality check thnx Old Pro! I am living still now in Belgium and look out on little mountains, never go there haha and now I am looking in or around Cabanas de Tavira... and I really want to become part of the village/community and get to know the Portugese people as well as of the Dutch, Belgian, English and other nationality people... if one knows a bungalow for me 3 bedrooms, a garage and a fenced yard for my 2 wonderful dogs a Dobermann and a Whippet and myself ;) I would love to hear that from you or anyone who knows something, hire longterm for at least a year or buy! Kind Regards!

To "evelynlammes" question about when to be in Portugal to avoid crowds...you can certainly find less crowded, even uncrowded, areas here. North of Porto, the far Western Algarve, are less crowded and on the water. Read Julie Dawn Fox's blog about the various areas; read Tim Leffel's book on Best Destinations for Less; look at the Eye Witness tourist guide. All of these provide current insights into the characters of areas across the country. But first, be certain that you qualify for the Schengen Visa so you don't waste your time!
