I'm moving in 12 days!!! So excited now, and just trying to get the smaller logistical stuff out of the way. I've signed up for a tmobile account to keep my USA number active for the time being, but I'm wondering if anyone has figured out the best way to do this and to have a Portuguese number too. I'd rather not carry two phones (or pay for two plans), but I'll need both numbers for the first year at least. I thought I would just buy a sim card there and swap them out but it seems like a hassle too. I'm sure some of you have the solution to this. Thanks in advance!

I'm going to tag onto my own question here - I'm also in need of a vet in Cascais, and the name of a pet store that might deliver. I'd like to order some things before I get there so we don't arrive and not have food! I'd also love to know how to have human food and water delivered! If you know how to set this up, I'm sure it would help others too. Thanks!

You could purchase a Skype number for 12 months that any phone in the USA can reach. Don't recall the cost. Skype works on phones and computers. Does that help? Countga

Congratulations Yummmmyme!
We have a solution for you and others from the US. We have a Google Voice phone number. It is free. You MUST sign up while you are still in the US. You can make free calls from anywhere in the world to any US phone number. You can to video chat that call is called Google Hangout and it is also free. Very similar to Skype and we find more stable.
My husband and I both have separate numbers. We have used them for 5 years to call our bank in the US and friends and an elderly aunt and our son in Japan. In fact we do video chats to Japan every week. You can use you phone or your computer. It is so easy!
You need a Gmail account and through there you sign up for Google voice.

Hi, Just got to Portugal, but I followed your advice before leaving and signed up for google voice numbers for my husband and myself. We couldn't port our numbers without disconnecting ourselves from our AT&T account, so we set up as forwarding from our US plan, thinking we could just update it when we got a new plan. My husband signed up with Vodafone yesterday, and I'm struggling to figure out how to get google voice to work again. It won't recognize his Portuguese number, which isn't really surprising, but there must be a way to make the google voice number work on its own. Did you run in to this issue? If so, do you remember how you solved it? Any help would be much appreciated.

To use your Portuguese phone using your Google Voice phone number you must use the Google Voice App.
We only use our Google Voice numbers by calling from our Google Account page on our computer. You can only call numbers in the US with your Google Voice Number.
I hope this helps.

mjohnson52312, It may be too late for you to implement my suggestion, but I found the easiest way for me to have both a US number and an overseas number was to buy a cell phone with dual SIM capability and GSM network. I have one SIM card for the US, and one for my city overseas. You can buy UNLOCKED phones that operate on the GSM network from Amazon for very reasonable prices. I purchased a Samsung S5 unlocked, with dual SIM capability for less than $200. Most of the world uses GSM, and AT&T, T- Mobile and one or two other providers in the US use GSM. The other US providers use CDMA network, which typically won't work in most overseas locations. One phone with 2 SIM cards covers just about everything I need. Might work for you as well.

Thanks for the reply. I think my husband lost his link to his google voice number when his SIM card was changed out and previous US number that was linked to the google voice number became inactive. I can't seem to fix that problem within the google voice app on his phone or on our computer. We can't get calls in or out to the google voice number, even using the app to place outgoing calls. I think I need professional help:) Our son will be here for Christmas. He's an IT guy, so hopefully he can figure it out.
