Hi we were informed by af pop that we could register at our local shade and have the same entitlement as the Portuguese without a social security number. However this is wrong and they should not advised their members of this. What happens if one of us gets sick or an accident happens are we covered using ehic card or do we need private healthcare.

I logged on to ask a similar question, so if you don't mind, I'll just tag along on this thread!

(BTW I don't know what shade or ehic card is).

I know we (non-EU) are required to have health insurance when applying for visa and residency. But I have heard of retired non-EU expats who live in Portugal using the local public health system. I wonder what they pay in comparison to citizens, and if they have access to the same services.

I have the same question. I've read conflicting information online. Are non-EU expats who do not work in Portugal, but living off their own savings, able to use the public healthcare system?

As I understand it, once you have a resident card you can use the public system. There is a cost, but not sure how much. Am coming to Lisboa in late May to investigate before actually moving. Private insurance can be expensive depending on age and medical history. Am 70...quotes are nuts so far.
