We are planning to retire to Portugal next summer in the Algarve. But we have read about the severe problems Portugal is facing with fatal infections contracted while in the hospital.
Since we will have private insurance I assume that means we would be taken to a private hospital in an emergency. Is that correct? Are the private hospitals experiencing as many fatal infections as the state run hospitals?

I live here only since oktober in the Algarve. When I opened an account at the bank, I could also obtain a health insurance which was advised to m, I will have my invoices paid back 50%. Also I was told that with this health insurance, when I had to go to a hospital, I was insured for being taken to a private clinic, which was recommended. I hope I have helped you with this? Kind regards, Thesi

I don't know where you're from but about 100,000 people die in U.S. hospitals every year from infections they got while in the hospital. Portugal is listed by the WHO as the 12th best healthcare in the world. The U.S is listed as the 31st best. I'd take my chances.
