Healthcare if you work in Portugal

I've been reading a lot about healthcare in Portugal. My wife and I are looking to move to Portugal in about 2 years. Am I mistaken in believing that if I work remotely for an American company and pay taxes in Portugal I will then be eligible for public healthcare in Portugal? I have a pre-existing condition that will be excluded from insurance and the only way I would be able to access treatment would be through the public healthcare system.

I believe that if you are a legal resident, you will qualify for the public healthcare in Portugal. However, as an expat you may have to pay some extra fees. Also, you need to get a health care user card and probably provide a Social Security card.
