I wanted to warn readers that there is a new wave of attorneys / advogados preying on US citizens applying for their Visas and Residence Permits. They are Portuguese or have Portuguese names. They are primarily individuals yet a 'firm' in Lisbon is doing this also. They are observing our posts here and on facebook sites, then reaching their targets and sometimes stating "I've been appointed to help you", sometimes just offering their services. They are charging between $1050 and $2000 for the initial Visa filing, first SEF appointment, NIF appointment and offering to help set up bank accounts. In some cases, they are advising that "all of your application can be done from Portugal" and/or "you don't need a visa to come here initially". Please note that this entire process can be done without attorneys, yet some individuals feel less anxious if they have legal help at the Portuguese end...however, these are extortionist prices that far exceed what an attorney should charge. Please be wary of being approached in this manner.
