My husband and I are planning a trip there in 2017. We would like a month that is the least favorable so we can get an idea of the "worst" weather etc. We want to spend time in different areas to find our place. What month do you think fits that? We will not be there during the tourist months since neither of us like crowds Thanks

We always tried to go in the hottest month and the coldest month so we could have an idea of what to expect. February and late summer gave us a good representation and also we were able to see what it was like with and without tourists. This worked well for the area we were looking, not sure if it would pertain to the place your are considering.

It really doesn't matter which month you visit a place for or whether you consider the 'worst' as referring to weather or tourists.
A month is simply not enough time to tell you very much about what it is like to live in any country.
While I can understand your thinking that if you like it in the 'worst' month then you will like it for the rest of the year, I would suggest to you that that thinking is WRONG.
Whether you will like a place enough to stay long term is not based on the 'worst' or 'best' month. It is based on a whole lot of factors that affect any individual. You might like it just fine in the 'worst' month but find that after 6 or 9 or 18 months that you miss your family and want to go back. Liking the 'worst' month won't tell you if that is going to happen.
The basic issue is that people want to make the RIGHT decision BEFORE they try it. That simply can't be guaranteed no matter what you do. The ONLY way to find out if a place is right for you in the long term is to live there for a long term.
If you think Portugal may be right for you, then go; live there and see what happens. 'Trial' trips can't tell you that.
I advocate diving in to the deep end, not pussy footing around in the shallows. If you want to know if you can swim, dive in and find out.

I've been told that Feb is the rainiest month in Lisbon/Cascais. I'm from seattle so that was important for me to know. Last August temperatures got up to over 40c (104F) in Lisbon. So I agree that either/both of those would be good times to have a look.

I spent 2 months in Almada/Sobreda to complete my residency requirements, open bank accounts, and to have an initial introduction to living here. I experienced great weather and very hot weather. I saw things I like and things I do not like and decided to move here in November. I think a person needs to spend at least 1 year to make a good decision about staying. As long as a person can accept that living here is different than the USA, it opens you eyes to living in a different country.
