Has anyone exchange US's Driver's license to Portuguese Driver's license? Can you comment on the documents required?

What you need to get your PT drivers license: A record from your state's Department of Transportation, notarized by the officials ($25). You need a statement from your Portuguese physician that you are healthy to drive a car, cycle or both. This is done on a specific form. You then go to the IMTT in Portugal, fill out the application and get your license. Obviously I cant answer as to what happens if your US record isn't clean. Look up IMTT online. Their website usually doesn't work but you'll get their email address and they respond well to email.

Yes, a certified copy of your driving record, a letter from a Portugal doctor, and you must surrender your USA license at IMTT. I received my Portugal license in the mail last month after a short wait. The clerks at the Lisbon IMTT were not exactly sure how to handle an American license since we do not show the day we received our first license and the license classifications are different. I had a California license for car and mortorcycle(CM1) which is equal to the highest class here. Beginning this year(2017), you might need to take a CPR class also. Seems silly to me but we are in a different country and part of the EU.

can I ask what do you mean by "certified". We are from California. Where did you go to Certify your US license?

I was recently looking this up for Florida and found a similar answer for California at the link below, note the part that says you have to mail in the form if you need an "official document." Hope this helps.

The standard certificate of document authenticy in the EU is called an Apostille - US authorities know about this and provide service on the state and federal levels for a fee. In California, the Secretary of State's office does it for $20 a document. Get a hardcopy sent to you by DMV and send with a send cover letter to the address in this website: http://www.sos.ca.gov/notary/authentication/
Federal document Apostilles are handled by the US State Dept.

On second thought an Apostille may be overkill here - if anybody has brought their state DMV's report to the IMTT and had that accepted as such, please confirm. Maybe you can save the 20 bucks and a wait.

I recently moved to Portugal from California. My California DL414 with the watermark was accepted by the Lisbon IMTT. You will also need a medical approval letter from a Portugal doctor.
