Importing a car from the USA

Has anyone imported a car from USA into Portugal and went through the required modifications to conform to the EU standards? If so, what are the typical modifications required? I have heard that typically the lights have to be changed and even the seats belts must be replaced. Is this the case?
I have done extensive research but although I found a ton of useful info on the importation documentation requirements, I have found nothing about the actual modifications typically required. If anyone has gone through the process and can share their experience, it would be greatly appreciated. Or if you can steer me to sights that may have this info would be great too.
Thank you.
If anyone can provide some insight

My question would be why bother? I think to financially justify importing a card is next to impossible.

Because I have a mint corvette that I would love to take to Portugal, but if major modifications are required, then it may not be worth the trouble.
Also, it is my understanding that cars are more expensive in Portugal than in the USA due to high tariffs. Is it not the case?

It is the case that cars are more expensive in Portugal - due largely to higher taxation. You will have to pay this to bring the car in. Safe to assume there are no financial savings to be made the only reason to do it would be if it is a classic car with appreciating value. Otherwise just sell it where it is now

I had a nice Honda Prelude that I decided not to ship because of the shipping costs and also I would not be able to have it serviced or repaired here in Portugal. I have been here for about 4 months and I actually saw a 1965 GTO yesterday driving on the street. It sounded like it had a 6 cylinder engine. Each to his own.
