I understand why a person would ask for where the large expat communities are. As an American couple, my husband and I are planning on coming there and looking at different areas in which to live. It is normal for people to want to have a bit of the familiar at first. We want to settle into a area and feel happy there. We do not want to move to Portugal and make it American. Far from that. Also I wonder how the Portuguese people feel about expats coming there looking for work. If the country is short on jobs then don't they dislike that? We will not be working there just spending winters there and trying to find peace.

Anti-Americanism is strong and growing all over the world (with good reason). Knowing that half of these people probably voted or support Fascist Leader Agent Orange, I would stay far away from their enclaves.

And would you feel really comfortable anywhere you wouldn't have swift access to a handgun or semi automatic weapon?

speak for urself, The people I talk to are just like me from Europe and no one is against America or against President Donald J. Trump. Why don't you try and live in Sweden, or do you think also nothing is the matter there?
Wish you much wisdom which one can pursue by f.i. informing oneself...

Are you kidding ? There are daily protests against TRUMP and his policies, at least 50%+ can't stand the man. I've never seen such response to a new president, ever.
For you to totally disregard what these people say and feel is to deny them their right to their opinions. Isn't that much like TRUMP and his followers ? YOU are obviously ONE OF THEM and don't care about people who disagree with you, you just blow them off.
Furthermore, world govts are not so keen from what they have seen from the FASCIST TRUMP either.
To have such an attitude is just a sign of ignorance and FASCISM
Of course, ITALIANS know all about FASCISM, don't they ?

You have the right attitude.
I've been to 45 different countries and always sought out the locals, never chased the Americans.
Isn't the whole thing about discovering new places, to get away from what you know and make new experiences ? Sure it is.
IF you go overseas to be next to Americans, you may as well stay home. People like this are just afraid of something new.
Learn the language and get to know the locals.

Most American's in my community are much more comfortable carrying their Bibles than a handgun. Seems to be the only weapon we need here. Peace.

Geeze, Louise, OutofThere, cool your jets! And stop watching so much crappy TV! Over half the country voted for Donald Trump, and gabillions of US citizens are still behind him 100%. Ditto, many people from lots of other countries. If you can't stand the heat, or you're too wimpy to face facts, and not adult enough to stop your whining and whimpering, you really need to go to some other country. I hear Canada is welcoming all kinds of pitiful whiners. Buy yourself some mukluks, put your Big Girl panties on, and go north! And stop hijacking someone else's legitimate post who has real questions. Now, do we need to make you go sit in a corner, or can you just grow up?

Six Years, when you are thinking about immigrating to a country where the economy is not on a tear, and there is joblessness, unless you have a skill that is in very high demand, and there are no citizens with that skill, the chances of you finding a job are really, really slim. It doesn't matter what the country is. I have found in several different countries that there is no "national" dislike of all Americans. The archetypal "Ugly American" is disliked everywhere. Be nice, be polite, make an effort to learn the language, however rudimentary, learn something about the history and culture of the country, and you will most likely be welcome by most people. Americans always told me the French were rude, the Swiss were cold, and the Spanish, Italians, and Portuguese were clannish. I never found any of that to be true at all! What goes around comes around. Do unto others as you would have others do unto you. These aphorisms have been true for thousands and thousands of years. And, we mostly get exactly what we expect out of life. Maintain a positive attitude and a genuine smile, accept people and cultures as they are, and you'll have a magnificent adventure!

Another person who is a TRUMP BULLY. Get over it. TELL me to move to Canada, you're so ignorant.
The people I know are 100% against TRUMP and his ideas, you don't have to acknowledge it but it's true.
YOU and your flunkies can't stand someone else who has a different opinion.
People like you ARE the REAL UGLY AMERICANS.
I'm sure you're not living overseas and have never been anywhere.

This is the thing: forget politics and what others think of America. Seriously, when one is serious about relocating to Portugal, then one researches & asks some questions on culture, climate, food..etc. Enjoy the peace it entails and stop worrying. I have a place in Azores, and still waiting in America for the time myself & husband to make the move(retirement), until then we will make the best of it, and do not care about what others think, Portuguese people are normal people trying to live a normal and happy life, of course I am Portuguese too, LOL. Please don't fret over petty things.....

I have been ignoring the negative posts. I believe they are all from the same person. As a parent and an educator I found ignoring is best in these situations. But thanks for having my back
