I'm in the process of getting as much done as possible in advance of my movement to Portugal. I've hit a snag with the Tax ID number. It would be easy to get if I were "in country" but I would be for a few months. How can I get one of these in advance? I've been pointed to lawyers or solicitors or "agent"? Your thoughts? Experience?

I met with an attorney at Edge in Lisbon and had my Fiscal number within 24 hours. They literally sent someone to stand in line at the Tax office while I was meeting with them! Send me an email if you want the contact.

If you were going to be sitting somewhere, why didn't you sit in the Finanças office instead of the attorney's office? You would have had your number in minutes, not 24 hours. And you would have saved money.

This is something you can do quickly and in person for €15 why would you waste €100's getting a lawyer to do it for you? There is really no benefit at all in having it before your visit.

This is MidMo. I need to add a bit of information. I'm trying to meet the insurance requirement for a residence visa. I've found a company but need a Tax ID to complete the application. I need to settle affairs here in the states before moving to Portugal in Sept-Oct. But here is the kicker. I'll turn 71 in June and understand that insurance companies are reluctant to issue policies to people past 70. So I have a narrow window to get the insurance transaction complete. So based on what has been discussed so far...I do not need to be in person...rather I could have an agent with the proper paperwork apply for the number...correct?

For what purpose do you need your NIF prior to being here? To rent or buy? All one needs do is take one's passport to their Financias office and ask for the NIF...might take an hour or two but there is no charge, and it's easy.

I'm encouraged to hear folks say they had no issues. I had heard stories of non EU folks who were told by Financas that they either needed to wait for their 1 year residence permit (rather than 4 month residence visa) or if they wanted it sooner come back with a Portuguese citizen "representative." I don't know anyone in Portugal so was thinking I'd have to hire someone. Is the consensus here I shouldn't have a problem? Thanks!

Midmo, are you certain that the fiscal number is the only thing lacking for purchasing insurance? Do you not need an address in Portugal? Or a bank account? I have never heard that 70 is the "magic number" for purchasing a policy. For example, Medis offers a policy that you can buy at 75. This policy may or may not meet your needs, it may in fact be limited in its coverage. Most applicants for residency visas purchase travel insurance as a "bridge" until they arrive and then purchase a permanent policy. If you do confirm that all you need is a fiscal number to purchase a policy of your liking (from abroad), and you don't plan to visit Portugal before you move here, then it seems that yes you can use an agent.
