Have done it several times and helped a few dozen people do it, as well. There is an article on this site about renewing the residence permit, posted by Susan Stults Korthase. All details there. Currently, most SEF offices are asking people to go online to get appointments. This is due to their work slowdown (grievance). Try the phone number and, if that doesn't answer, use the online booking.

Hello, renewal was easier than the first time. When you go to SEF website to set up an appointment for renewal there is a form for you to download and complete. It will tell you what to bring. As I recall I just had to show my monthly income. That was basically it. Cost was 151.50 euros as I recall. I am in Tavira so SEF access was good as opposed to what I have heard about Lisbon. Thank you for your feedback. Since you went through the process, I have a few additional questions.
1. For my initial year, my appoinment took 3 months. I arrived early July 2016 and my SEF appointment was in late September. For a renewals, is it generally a shorter wait period?
2. Since this renewal is for 2 years, what did you provide for a proof of medical insurance? Did you have a 2 year contract with your health covereage company through your local bank?

Juliya...these are thoughtful questions and I adore thoughtful questions! 1. You can not make your renewal appointment any sooner than 35 days prior to your permit expiration date. It has been taking more than one but less than 3 months for renewal appointments, similar to the initial appointment waiting period.
2. Your one year proof of paid health insurance will suffice, even though your renewal is for 2 years.
