Car importation

Hi. I'm moving to Loule in next few weeks. I am confused about something to do regarding getting a car.
I realise if I become resident then I can import 1 car free of import duty. However I don't want to import my rhd. I want an lhd. I realise part of getting a free import you must own for 12 months. As I'm moving soon this isn't possible for me to buy an lhd. Sit on it. Then import after 12 months.

This therefore is the idea I had so please feel free to ruin it for me. I should buy an lhd in uk and drive it over to Portugal . Then after 6 months. Drive it back to uk. Sell it. Buy a new car lhd. Bring back to Portugal. Repeat every 6 months.

Is this possible? I'm just hearing one fly in this ointment would be that as I would be Portuguese resident then I wouldn't qualify to drive British car. Obviously for this to work I need to be able to legally drive a uk taxed insured uk car.

Can anyone help me. Does anyone think my idea (although an effort) is viable?

Thank you all.

Buying a LHD car a year ago would have given you a useful option but without that you are just better off biting the bullet and buying a car in Portugal.

Yes they are a little more expensive but they also hold their value better. Plenty to choose from on the standvirtual website.

The hassle of keeping a UK car street legal is really not worth it and the costs of the return journey twice a year will quickly stack up.

PT insurance is cheaper than the UK and for in and around town you can disregard luxury and status and go for every day practicality.

Thanks for your advice and pointing me to that website. Seems a good site. Just need to convince myself to pay the extra or down grade my car. Still I think I can handle that given all the other benefits Portugal has to offer life.
