Motorcycle Import

My husband and I already have our American motorcyle(we have owned it more than 12 months) in Portugal on a tourist visa. We just received our schengen visa to go back to portugal and get our residence card. Does anyone know the process of getting a vehicle registered in portugal? I read somewhere that only portugeuse nationals are exempt from duty and VAT, but I have also read that we get 1 duty and VAT free vehicle with the move. Any tips or suggestions? Best, Julia & John :)

Yes you can import only one in a lifetime and you do not have to be a Portuguese citizen, given that you are a legal resident.

How did your schengen visa process go. Did you have to hire a lawyer...or did the process on your own.

Thanks if you know of any contacts of links to help us with the motorcycle process let us know, we are hoping we don't have to pay VAT on the motorcycle. Do you know if we have to pay VAT?

The visa process went pretty smooth, our consulate was in DC so it took a little less than 4 weeks for the entire process. Let me know if you have any questions :)

You would be exmpet on VAT on the 1st import. reach out to Ines Salvo a lawyer in Lisbon. I found her very helpful in all aspects of imegration and imports. here e mail is >>ines.salvo@eimigrante.pt

Thanks so much! I just emailed the lawyer. Do you have experience working with this lawyer or importing anything? I am just not sure if I need to wait until I get my residence card or start the process now.

Hey! dr8k, I emailed the person you referred to me on May 8th and have not heard anything back yet. We spoke with Eurofinesco/(an accountant) the other day and they told us they don't do that anymore because it is so complicated but for us to join the automobile club of portugal and we can find someone to help us there. Can you send me a link of where it says that our first import should be VAT exempt? I can't seem to find it anywhere.

Best
Julia :)

It should be under the import rules on the Visa Section on Portugal website.

You may also contact there office in DC.

Sorry do not have the link handy.
