Can anyone send opinions on what town or village you enjoyed most north of Portugal? Perhaps places closest to the Ocean or to Spain and why? Thank you!

Thank you for posting this question. I am also very interested in hearing the insights of others. I will be exploring the area this summer, with an eye open for the place that calls me to settle.

Hello. I think your original question needs clarification. Did you mean any city north of Lisbon? North of Portugal is the country of Spain.

Thank you Ffclarke! My husband and I like to stay away from the very touristy areas and the heat. We do enjoy the colder and more quiet parts of the country with good food, small village restaurants, coffee shops, and great scenery. We like a house that we can remodel if needed with lots of room to plant our own veggies and perhaps own some chickens too and share own lives with friends and neighbors. I am very susceptible to high temperatures but we both love winters better too. God bless your summer trip and keep us posted! I'll sent you a private message with my email address so you don't forget about sharing with us information on this particular issue. Let's hope somebody else sends tips of other beautiful places north of Portugal.
Bye bye!

I suspect you meant "in Northern Portugal" rather than "north of Portugal", which means Spain.

I think I would also prefer the northern part of the country as well, but can't offer any first hand information because my first trip is this fall.

Hi,
My Wife and I have settled in Northern Portugal. In Braga. Which is considered the 3rd. Largest City in Portugal in population.
We enjoy the cool weather, and the small crowds yet, we are very close to the Coast and Spain as well. We have access to great open markets, Supermarkets, good Medical facilities, and access to all main means of transport. I would suggest you explore Coimbra, Viseu, and Guimaraes. Portugal is a small country, and has very good transport, trains, and Bus service to connect all places. If you want to get more information on Braga send me an email.

jucabb, thank you for your comments. We've been researching those areas from here and they look like the kind of place in the world we want to be at. The question for us and for many others who are looking into those areas is, what is the internet service like in those parts of the country and, if there any?? The Portuguese live a much quieter live style without all the technology we have, but that technology is what allow us to work from anywhere we want and make our loving for many of us, as well as staying in touch with our friends and families. We've seen the innumerable number of breathtaking homes for sale up there. So many gorgeous homes that need some work, We wouldn't not what to pick when the time comes. Our fear is the internet service, since we both work from home. We already experienced the same when we travelled to San Martin de los Andes, Bariloche and Cordoba in Argentina and found "the place to be" but had to give it all up because of the lack of proper internet service. The most they offer in those places is 2 MG at the most outrageous rates. I hope we won't have to throw Portugal away too because of that. Can anyone please send us feedback on that? Thank you!
