Hi, I am sure that this topic is raised all the time, so apologies for doing so again. I know that the rental prices that are aimed at expats are much higher than those aimed at locals. My husband and I are British/American and are moving to Portugal next September. We want to do a six month rental in Lisbon to start while we look around and can only afford about 1,000 euros a month. What are the good local websites for rentals? Thank you!

To Battersea59's question about sites/agencies: First, the rental prices are affecting locals, immigrants and expats equally. We are all suffering from a heavily reduced inventory and escalating prices. In Lisbon, each major agency exists, but they don't share their listings. You'll need to go online to the Portuguese sites offered by Re/MAX, Porta da Frente, Keller Williams, Portugal Property and so on. You can also find non-agency rentals at Home Hunting, a sales and rental 'bridge' between owners and buyers/renters. Consider as well the cities just outside of Lisboa, such as Oeiras, Paco d' Arcos, Belem.

When a property is advertised there is but one price listed and its the same for everyone both local and immigrant. However there is a difference in expectation and I don't believe most would be happy to live in some of the low cost rentals that a local may find acceptable. As always in life you get what you pay for

You could join a Facebook group. There is one for the Cascais and Sintra area: Residential Rentals and Sales Cascais... I am advertising there, but you only need it from September ??

Thank you for the excellent info, CraigandMicki. My husband & I just arrived in Portugal for 1 month to investigate as a place to live. We're interested in Lisbon region & will follow up your tips to learn more about apt rentals.

Yes - we don't arrive until next September but are trying to figure out our budget ahead of time and where we could afford to live and still get into Lisbon fairly easily!

We are in Lisbon, at our second “temp” flat, while we decide on the neighborhood/area that will suit us best long term. Every single realtor we’ve spoken with tells us to begin our search one month before we need the flat. Inventory is tight and apparently it goes fast. Our top budget is $1000 and none have said that’s impossible...yet. Hope this is helpful.

I am glad to hear that estate agents aren't telling you it is impossible to find a place to rent for 1,000 euros a month. That is about our budget and I have been getting worried!

I have been researching moving to Portugal and looking into 'outside the box' areas to rent or buy in - while Lisboa and Cascais are very nice, they tend to be more expensive. One area that looks real decent and is on the river is SETUBAL. Looks like it's right accross the river from Lisboa. Seems to have many marinas and is much cheaper than other areas. While there worth a look. Can't for the life of me understand why people like the Algarve; tiny towns full of tourist traps (over priced) and not much going on. Looks DREADFULLY BORING.
