Expat accomodation?

Hi,

I am considering a position at IBM Qatar. I've heard and seen references to expat compounds. What are these like? When I hear compound I think of something like "Hogan's Heroes". What is it like living in a compound? Is it necessary to live in a compound? Does living in a compound mean you can apply western values on behaviour, dress, etc..?

Thanks,

Chris

Ramy,

Not here but I did manage to find an expat living in Qatar who mailed me the following info:

Accommodation is plentiful, but it's a bit pricey. Villas are going to run between 4500 and 6000 QAR for a moderate sized place. I found a block of flats near the coast in a new building for 2500 a month, and for a 2
bedroom it's okay.
QAR 2,500 gets a 2 br, 1.5 bath flat, completely unfurnished, no air conditioners, either. Window/wall A/C units run between QAR 1,000 and QAR 1,500 each. My place has 3 now. Grocery bills are generally okay, as long as you don't go nuts buying only imported items. Local and regional veggies are low priced and good quality - except for celery, don't ask me why.
Last month's water and electric bill (with 3 A/Cs running 24/7) was around QAR 250. However, that was only for the 2 weeks I had been in the new flat, so I expect that will rise to QAR 500-600 a month.

Another site I found online was riveria-compound.com or somesuch URL. The accomodation there was around 10,000 QAR / month however.

Regards,

Chris

Thanks for the info Chris.

I might be checking the place out soon. So in the meantime, can you find out what unfurnished 3-4 bedroom appartments are going for with centralised AC. I wouldn't be too keen on buying wall ACs. I heard that there are some good ones along the Doha coast line which is supposed to be pretty fancy.

Much Appreciated.

I suggest you contact Doc Farmer directly. That's who I've been talking to. He's already there and I'm in Melbourne - so he's going to be better equipped to answer any questions you have.

He's on this forum but his email is Doc.Farmer@sbm.net.sa

Good luck.
