I am currently being woo'd to take a senior executive post in Bucharest for what I consider to be a relatively small salary compared to what the post brings in the US. Can anyone tell me what living conditions are in Bucharest? And how the cost of living compares to any major city in the US. Also, generally what the exec-ex-pat life is like. The assignment is for a year, and the adventure lures, but I want some kind of realistic picture of rents and groceries, and taxis and restaurants. All help and advice is welcome.
Thanks

Pollyana, I was born and raised in Romania, and I'm a US citizen now. Here's succintly the story: Living conditions in Bucharest range from very good ($1,000 - $1,500 /mo.) to modest ($200/mo.) If it's only for a year, use a relo company - ask for digital pictures of the apartment/condo. It's a cosmopolitan city, with 2.5 million inhabitants and a sizeable expat comunity. Dining out can be done in very wide range of styles and prices, but the average cost is 25% less than here. Groceries can be purchased from any grocery store for about 10% - 15% less than here. Taxis tend to be higher priced than here because the gas in Europe is about 3 times more expensive. Overall, the standard of living is less than in the US, but if I were you, I'd go there for the professional experience. Senior executive post AND a developing country experience should look good on your resume.
Good luck, Gabriel

Thanks, Gabriel.
Good information, and good advice in the same post.
I will be going over on the 15th for a week and a chance to evaluate the job and the personnel. It will take a serious problem to put me off the experience, so I am already mentally packing, and hopefully I will be packing for real after my week in the land of the gypsies and dracula.

"in the land of the gypsies and dracula. "
Hi Pollyana,
I live in Romania since I was born. I have many expat friends here and same as you, before coming here, they belived that Romania is "the land of the gypsies and dracula. " Well.. we have gypsies, same as many other countries. I am not so sure about Dracula.. some people are still coming to look for him.. But.. in case you come here..be prepared to discover a beautifull country and nice and friendly people. Probably you'll be surprised to discover that Romania is not at all the country you saw on the news. Lots of people speak english, german, french. If you want to travel in Romania take a look here: http://www.turism.ro/english/index.php There is not enough place here to describe my country.. but.. as far as I heard it is one of the safetiest places in the world.
Have a nice day! Anca

Actually. Gabriel has MOST of his facts correct. The only thing he is ABOLSUTELY wrong on is the cost to take a taxi. Prices are 10K lei start costs and 10K (high-end) per KM. Maybe I have been out of the States to long, but last time I checked prices for taxis in the States are DEFINATELY more expensive.....
