Hello ExpatExchange.com Members!

One area of interest for many expatriates is the need for assistance in
settling in and the management of culture shock. In order to identify
the information most needed by expats as they adapt to international
living, we'd like to know the biggest hurdles you faced in the process
of moving overseas.

Please help us in this project by answering these few questions:

When you moved to Romania, what was the most difficult part of settling
in there?

How much difficulty did you have with culture shock in Romania?

What would be the best, single piece of advice you'd give to an expat
(or soon to be expat) in Romania?

The worst part of settling in Romania is how long it takes to get anything accomplished. If you apply for anything through the Romanian authorities, it takes FOREVER. I tried to extend my stay there and they took their sweet time getting me the information and taking care of the paperwork. I tried to get one of my half Romanian sons a Romanian birth certificate and they said it would take around 4 months. I only had about a month before our time limit to stay in the country would be up.

I find the culture in Romania to be very fine. I have a Romanian husband which may help me with it, but I think Romanians are overall pretty nice people and easy to get along with. The only thing that might take some getting used to is that the quality of living compared to the USA or some other highly developed nation is not quite as high.

I would say study up on Romania and learn some of the Romanian language before going there. If you have any Romanian friends, they can be very helpful to you.

Adjusting to Romania will take some time. If you live in Bucharest the city at first is not welcoming, Romanians are nice people but they are not very trustworthy.
So if you are a foreigner you must be careful.
Money is a big issue in Romania, everybody wants to show they have
