I am contemplating buying a vacation home in Transylvania and eventually, either retiring permanently, or just spending the summers there; haven't decided yet, I have another 5-6 years to decide. Do the Romanian laws allows the Government to tax my retirement income? I will be paying income taxes in the US and wonder if am being exposed to double taxation of my income which will be mainly 401k, Social Security and investment dividends. Also, how are the property taxes calculated? Anyone with knowledge of these issues is welcome to comment. Thank you kindly.

Hi,
I am a Canadian and have the same idea as you. My wife and I arrived in Transylvania three weeks ago. We have rented a house for a year to see if we like it and will then decide if we want to buy. I am in the process of getting a long term visa and then we will see. I can try to pass on experiences as we proceed if you like.

I'd be very interested in the reply too. I've posted a threat a few days about about buying land in Transylvania and our plans are also to retire there in about 5/6 years time. We're looking to build our own house so we're in the process of buying land at the moment.
I hadn't considered the tax situation although friends retired in Transylvania and they haven't mentioned any double taxation. I'm guessing it's not the case but i'll try to find out too.

Hi AJC, (any connection with ajc.com? LOL) That sounds like a great idea but perhaps a monumental undertaking, unless you are connected with a trustworthy construction company that would handle the whole process for you. We were thinking that would be more fun to buy an old house and restore it to its former glory adding all the modern amenities and conveniences. Although personally I’m not gifted when it comes to constructions and will have to totally rely on others expertise and craftsmanship. Good luck and keep in touch!

we're looking at building a Strongwood log home but using local builders. We've found a fabulous lady that lives in transylvania who is a project manager and will work on our behalf to ensure it's all done properly. if you google Adriana Horstman you'll find her. She maybe able to advise you too about your plans. She's VERY knowledgeable about all things to do with building etc in Transylvania. She's actually dutch but speaks perfect English

Hi, I would advise going with a local respected agent and also with signed contracts. Regarding the construction, please note that it is very important to also have documents and not pay large advances. The problem is that many small companies went out of business and you may be at a loss. It is probably safer to buy something existing and do improvement work.

Good day, I'm a Canadian living in Romania now for 4 years. We have built a very nice executive home in Ivo, Transylvania. "izvoare" area. The land is 2000 m2the home is 350 m2, it's a beautiful ski area with Deer ( Red & Roe) right in front of our house, wild boar, bear & wolf close by.....surrounded by forest & streams
