Hi, I've been living in Canada (Montreal) for almost 10 years and my husband and I decided to move to Cluj (Romania) at the end of the summer. We have 3 kids born in Quebec (6, 4 and 1 yr old) so it's going to be a big change for us all to move back to Romania. I am an acupuncturist and my husband works in IT and he has already got a job offer so I think professionnally we will do ok. The only thing that I'm worried about is the kids' education... I remember schools in Romania were pretty terrible. Is it the same nowadays ? Are there any good schools in Cluj? The Transylvania College? The Spectrum school? Any government school that would be ok? Thank you .

We are also moving back, with 2 kids (9 and 12) after 13 years in Canada and 7 in Bahamas. We went to Bucharest in the spring and we specifically inquired about schools. We didn't see anything different from what you would see in a big city in Canada. We don't want the kids to go to an international school - we had that for so many years and it's not worth the money (that could be a long discussion). I believe that all the schools in a central area of a big city are good considering that most of the parents are still interested in the kids performing well. We want the kids to integrate properly, learn Romanian, even if, who knows, we may leave after one year. Kids are highly adaptable, especially at a young age like yours.

My husband and I moved from Chicago to Brasov about a year and a half ago, after many visits we fell in love with the place my husband was born. I'm American. My husband Romanian. We moved with our two children 4&1yo. My 4 yo was in public school, preschool for the 1/2 of the school year last year and the entire year, this year. While I loved that he was with other kids and socializing we have pulled him out and are homeschooling the remainder. We found many kids being sent to school sick(my son got Scarlett Fever), and a lack of discipline regarding the conduct of teachers( leaving classroom unattended, smoking, speaking about spanking, threats to spank kids in the class, name calling and public shaming) The plus side to sending him to public school he now speaks fluent Romanian. Next year we will send him to the international school or homeschool.

Thank you Uiowachick01. That's pretty much what I meant when I said that school in Romania was terrible. In fact that's my major concern, that the kids don't get treated the way you decribe it. And I know this still happents because those teachers still are the fruit of an abused comunist society. But I still hope that in the North of the country people are nicer than in the south. No offence, I come from Prahova and my husband comes from Baia Mare and I always saw in the people from the North a nice, civilized influence from Hungaria...
