I am considering moving to Romania next year to live with my boyfriend who is from and currently living in Romania. My family has obvious concerns about the plan including concerns about the country. Could anyone give me some general knowledge about concerns, differences to be aware of or advice for someone moving from America to Romania? My boyfriend is a big help of course, but I would like an unbiased opinion. Thank you.

I am a Romanian and I lived in Canada for 3 years. As far as safety goes, I don't think you should have anything to worry about. In my books, Romania is a lot much safer than the sates. Now, for the rest it depends on where in Romania you to live. A word of caution, don't go to live in Cluj-Napoca, the capital of sound pollution!, with 10 speakers/bus stop disgorging blasting commercials, music and reminders for paying the taxes.

Hi, I think the first thing that you have to realise is that Romania is nothing like America. The pace of life is considerably slower ( which for me is a real bonus but others might find it a difficult transition to make). In America, everything is on your door step. Whatever you want/ need it's generally within easy reach. You won't find things quite as accessible in Romania and your choices will be far more limited. Similarly with entertainment...if you like western entertainment such as cinemas/ bowling/ mcdonalds(!) etc then you will be struggling unless you live in one of the larger cities. Romania is full of culture and traditions and is a wonderful place because of it and the people generally are lovely. I've visited the country on a number of occasions are i'm eventually going to be retiring there in about 5 yrs time. I've found it to be a very safe place but again it all depends on where you'll be living. If you're in a city then the advice would be the same as in any big city..always be aware of your surroundings and be vigilant. In the countryside though things are generally pretty safe. Really you should perhaps go and spend a few months there on a visitor's visa to see what you think. It will be a shock to the system to just move there without having visited first and experienced what Romania has to offer. Best luck on whatever your choices are though Amanda

All I can tell you, is that you can move without any problems. You get to love this country. It is a peaceful country, with a very tasty food, in the USA the same food would cost you a lot.I can stay at your disposal for any further questions.Success.

Hi. I have been in that same position. I moved to romania to be with my romanian boyfriend and now husband 8 years ago. It is not going to be an easy move. I am a cross cultural coach and even for me it was hard. If you need advice I am happy to chat and share what I have learned
