You must verify with the bank whether your card will work there. Some don't. Plus Romania is often blocked and you must notify your bank you will be in Romania (or other countries) and you authorize it's use. Apparently some bank employees don't know this. The policy is set by the credit card's clearing house, not the bank itself. Call the customer service number on your card and ask them. In addition, I would NOT use the cards as freely in shops and random cash machines as we do in North America. That's begging for trouble. Whenever I'm there I get cash from machines only attached to banks and use cash for spending money. I have informed my bank of this so if there are ANY purchases made I can challenge them because I told them I would not purchase anything, only take cash from the machines attached to bank buildings. When you want to buy a car your bank can, of course, wire the money.
