" Hi, I apologise that this is off the topic somewhat but I am finding it hard to get information and you seem to know what you''re talking about. I am graduating from Electronics Engineering in July and want to live and work in Russia. (My brother is married to a russian girl as is my best mate.) I can speak Russian poorly but have long since held a fascination for the place. Would you know of any employment agencies, companies or networks that would be able to help me. "

" Dear Edward- Hi, and glad to meet you. I currently live in Novosibirsk, and I''d be glad to help if I can. The trouble is, first of all, there are few if any employment agencies in Russia, and those that exist are in Moscow and Petersburg of course. Is that where you''d like to go? If so, there are want ads in the St.Petersburg and Moscow Times online which might help. My guess is though, if you don''t speak Russian very well, they won''t be able to use you in the capacity of electrical engineer. I personally have a degree in economics and I am only here on a fellowship from the US government- I doubt that I could find work as an economist with a Russian firm (although my Russian is pretty good. They''re kind of touchy about security still). If you want to just come over and then hunt up a job from here (which would probably be easier), what I would do is get a language school to issue a visa as an English teacher and do that part time while I looked. The pay is crap, but with negotiation, you can get them to give you an apartment. If you are interested in that, I can help you, but remember that it''s in Novosibirsk and not Moscow. If you''d like me to get in contact with one of the places here about getting a visa for you as a teacher, just let me know. If you have any other questions, please ask! Erin Russia "

" Dear Edward, I am no longer in Russia, I just came back to the US because there isn''t a much opportunity for gainful employment for someone with my skill set. However, you are, or could be, in a different situation. Russia''s technology market isn''t well developed but there are opportunities. The ruble default (economic crisis) has made the cost of employing foreigners prohibitive so expect to make somewhat less than you would in your home country. I would definitely wait until after you graduate to go there and seek employment, try to improve your language skills before you go as well, inevitably language abilities help qualify you for many more possible jobs. As far as contact info goes, I worked with several employment agencies during the course of my journalism work covering the Russian labor market. The following is a list of what I consider the best and who to talk to: Ancor Anna Rozhdestvenskaya 095 937 3601 phone 095 956 2807 fax www.ancor.ru Intercomp Walter Ragonese 095 659 1415 phone 095 961 3550 fax info@intercomp.ru (email) UniStaff Egor Gorgonov 095 203 4603 or 203 9905 phone 095 203 5073 fax The Russian Connection Pavel Ishanov 095 209 0115 phone 095 200 3090 fax pi@ruscon.ru (email) www.ruscon.ru Also, I would take a look at The Career Forum newspaper and the Moscow Times. Both newspapers have extensive employment listings although The Career Forum is only available in Russia and the Moscow Times only runs their employment section on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Moscow Times is available online and is really the best source of jobs for expatriates. I am not certain about engineering work, but computer skills are in demand. Another thought that comes to my mind is this, Russia is not a good place to looking for job, but it is a good place to go and start a business. I wouldn''t show up and expect to start off in business right away, there are certain risks and circumstances one should be aware of before starting a Russian business and without language skills, its probably best to get advice from someone who has been in Russia a good long time (Walter Ragonese is a good person for that). Also Aika Jaxybayeva of Prime Standard, is a founder of the Small Business Forum an organization that could be provide helpful advice in business start up. Like your friend and brother, I am married to a Russian woman and have a brother living there. Russian women are the best part of the country and it is a very exciting, beautiful place to live and work, if you can find it. Good luck and do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance, it is my pleasure to help out however possible.
