I wonder how it worked out for John (Topic "Moving to Russia" from 2003) with a crazy idea of moving to St-Pete. I'm planning to move there too (I'm Russian) with my husband (who is American) and I found out that even if he has temp. residence he still needs to get a permission to leave the country and come back (it's remindes me my communist childhood :). Does anybody know is it difficult to obtain such permissions (visa, etc.)? How long does it take? And the most important is it still hard to live over there? Are there some Americam community gatherings? I remember 7 years ago everybody was getting together in the American consulate.

Hello Lubasha,

I just found this website and your posting re: your planned move to St. Petersburg. I have been living here since last year and think I can answer some of your questions. First, I have not heard of required permission to *leave* Russia. I am here on a multiple re-entry business visa. I have absolutely no problem coming and going from the coutry, and do not need to apply for any permission. I have left Russia more than 5 times this year... Depending on his visa and registration status once you come to Russia, your husband may have to register each 3 months, and leave the country at least once every 6 months. The closest foreign city is Lappeenranta, Finland - a 3 hour drive from St. Petersburg. The requirement for leaving Russia is easily satisfied by crossing the border at Lappeenranta and returning.

There is a loose ex-pat community here, although I am not aware of anything strictly American unless it's parties at the Consulate Marine Bar. There is a "Hash House Harriers" group here (a drinking group with a running problem is how they self-identify), and a restaurant called City Bar which tends to be a central American expat meeting place.

I hope I've ansered a few of your questions. I'm always happy to help out a newcomer. If you decide to move here, do keep in touch. My email is jengaspar@gmail.com

Best,
Jen Gasoar

The resident card you are referring to can be obtained through the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the requirement to depart Russia is covered with a multiexit visa which can also be obtained through MID however as Jennifer mentioned if your husband is moving on business then the one year multi entry business visa is the easiest way. One thing is that who ever sponsors his visa they are responsible for making sure that he is registered once he arrives. Are you from St Pete? Where is your propiska from?

I lived in St Pete and Moscow for 10 years and never experienced any problems with the business visa.

Best,

Dan
