Someone has told me that Russian customs laws re art are very strict, and that I may have trouble taking my original Russian paintings home with me. I was also told there is a place in Moscow where I can get an official OK for taking my art with me. But this person did not know where the place is, and I have not been able to find out. Can anyone help?

You can arrange to have items appraised and/or certified for export with the appropriate permits through the Ministry of Culture - 8 Neglinnaya Ulitsa, 3rd Floor, Room 29 495 921 3258. Icons (my personal favorite) are said to be particularly troublesome.

Indeed you can arrange an export permit via the Ministry of culture. Usually moving companies include this in the service package.
In case you buy art at a gallery it is easiest to ask them to arrange the permit.
