" Hi all, can anyone give me some practical help on the regulations regarding clothing for expat women? My wife and Daughter (11) will be accompanying me for the next 2 years what do they have to wear anything specific on their heads arms or otherwise in order to go out in public? My wife is not keen on a head to toe dress, but would like to know what the ""norm"" is for other expat wife''s?? similarly, my daughter is 11 going on 12 and likewise we need to know if she will need to be ""covered"" in any way?? Many thanks. Dave G "

" It mostly depends on what area you are in . We spent 2 years in the Khobar/Dharan area. Many expat women would wear an abaya (the long black robe coverup) over their clothes, but nothing on their heads. Most of the time we would just wear regular clothes - long skirts, tops WITH sleeves. No jeans or shorts in town; this goes for men too. On the compound where you will be living, you can usually wear whatever you wish. Other areas of Saudi are much stricter than this coastal area. It is always best to check with the people you will be working with to see what is accepted in that area. "

" Hi Dave G. My name is Bob and I have lived in Riyadh and Jeddah, Saudi Arabia for 18 months now. I''m not married, but can give you some information. Yes, you wife will have to wear a black Abaya that goes from sholders to ankles. She will also have to wear a black scarf ofver her head, but does not have to cover her face. I don''t think your daughter willhave to wear the Abaya until she reaches age 13, but this is something you can check on with the embassy or another family when you arrive. The other thing that will effect your wife is she will not be allowed to drive. Women are not allowed to drive in Saudi. Hope you enjoy your stay in Saudi. Where are you going to be working, company, city, etc. Good Luck Bob "
