" Do western women have to wear abayas now? When we lived in Jeddah we wore tops with long sleeves, slacks, long skirts, and galabeahs that we had made in the souk. If it was Ramadan or Eid, I would sometimes take the extra precaution of wearing a scarf and sunglasses, but I didn''t feel I had to do it. We had a part-time driver, which 20 years ago was not a budget breaker. I do know that companies did have shuttle buses for taking the women from the compounds to the shopping areas. I even took taxis by myself when I was 12, but I think that''s not done anymore. I wouldn''t let a girl of any age do it now. No point in repeating scary stories -- just exercise caution.
