" Hello. I''ll be arriving in Riyadh shortly and am curious to know about compounds in and around the city. I''m wondering if expats have a choice of compounds on which to live? Being a single, Canadian male, I''m also wondering if there are ''sections'' within compounds for ''non-family types''. How about single or shared accomodations? Are there 1 bdrm apartments available or must everyone share multi-room suites? Can anyone recommend a particular compound and why? Any replies would be appreciated. Thanks, Robert Willis myiironu@yahoo.com "

" Costs vary widely from about SR 30,000 to SR 300,000 per year. Most companies will assist with your housing costs, by either providing free housing to you, or by providing an allowance (usually 25% of your basic salary) to assist you with housing expenses if you decide you don''t want to live in what they provide. You may want to clarify this with your new employer before you arrive - your bargaining position is really shaky when you are here. If your employer allows, you do not have to live on a compound. Apartments are available (studio, 1 to 4 bedrooms). Singles are segregated on some compounds, but that is uncommon. Some expats share apartments. Unfortunately, it takes quite a while in Riyadh to become familiar with surroundings and accommodation offered, much longer to find a suitable partner to share with. "

" I''m leaving for Riyadh tomorrow (Sunday!). I did discuss the accomodation situation with my employer. I can either receive an allowance (as you say) or have the employer provide accomodation. I''ll be working for Riyad Bank, by the way. Initially, they confirmed that I will be setup in a 2-bdrm with no partner. I don''t know where or any other details. I hope that I''ll have a choice as to a final destination. Do you have any recommendations on where to stay? Remember, I''m a single Canadian man! Thanks again. Rob Willis myiironu@yahoo.com "
