" Hi everyone,I just found this site and am so excited to finally get some first hand info. My husband and I and our 9 year old son will soon be moving to Jubayl. What''s it like for wives and children? My husband works for Flour. Everyone I''ve talk to said it was awful and tells me not to go. I grew up overseas and am quite adventurous. I''m excited about the move. I want to know the do''s and don''ts, the bring and do bother bringing kind of things. waiting to hear from anyone! Dawn "

" Dear Dawn, I live in north-central Saudi Arabia and am a male teacher and so my experience will be quite different from yours. However, I spent the Christmas vacation in Dammam which is near where you will be going. That region is more liberal than here. You can probably wear western clothes in public as some American women do, but I think you will have a more positive experience with the people in the city if you wear the covering over your clothes when you are in public. That says to the people that you respect their customs. Some Americans get there and want to live as they do in the States. They become ugly Americans. I believe firmly in doing as the Romans do when in Rome. After all, we are guests in THEIR country. Some Americans are disliked here because they are often loud, aggressive and expect the world to revolve around them. It doesn''t, really. You will meet other wives when you come here, but for a positive experience don''t compare with what you find at home. Take things as they are. You will not change them. And, just enjoy your new experience. There are riches to be found. You know, I am sure, that women do not drive here. And so, your husband will have to take you places. But, like myself, adjust to what is different. Hopefully, you will make friends from all over the world here. There is a large American community that works at Aramco, if you want to have those contacts. You have lived abroad, but not in a place like Saudi Arabia. Nonetheless, your experiences here can be wonderful. It all depends upon your attitude is to what you encounter. I would encourage you more that ever not to compare with what you are used to. I am happy here and glad to be away from the United States where the moral decline seems to continue at breakneck speed. I am in no hurry to return, although I will do so for the summer vacation when the college will be closed. I wish you all of the best, and know that if you really want it, you will have all of the best. Sincerely, Reuben "

" Gooday Dawn Depends on where your off to - Eastern, Central or Western Province... ie Al-Khobar in the East, Riyadh in the Central Province or Jeddah in the west... All have a different flavour and some are more open that others.. I live in the Eastern Province city of Al-Khobar and enjoyed the openness, now working in Bahrain and absolutely loving it. Pat "

" Hi Dawn I hope that by now you are in Jubail and have found out that things are not as bad as you have heard.. I am at the Nesma Village. (B-11). You will find that friendships developed here tend to be a lot stronger than back home.. If you and your husband are interested in Scuba Diving, we have a very large diving community here.. I have been here for 19 years and I also teach scuba diving.. "
